Signature · 20 KB ceiling

Resize a signature to under 20 KB

Twenty kilobytes is a generous allowance for a signature. If your scan is clean, this limit is easy to meet and the result will look sharp rather than compressed.

This page brings any signature image under that ceiling locally, in your browser.

Typical signature requirements
Portal or examTypical signature requirement
SSC (CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD)10–20 KB
IBPS, SBI and other banks10–20 KB
State PSC and state recruitment boards10–20 KB
University and admission portals20–50 KB
Other government application formsOften 20 KB or stated in the notification

Where a pixel size is also specified — commonly around 140 by 60 pixels — both rules apply.

You have room to spare here

At 20 KB a signature can stay reasonably large in pixels, which matters if the portal displays it at a decent size on the final admit card or form.

Because a signature carries so little visual information, most clean scans will land under 20 KB with little or no visible loss at all.

Preparing the source properly matters more than the tool

The single biggest improvement you can make is to crop tightly. A scan of a whole A4 sheet with a small signature in the corner wastes most of its bytes on blank paper.

Crop to just outside the stroke, leaving a small even border on all four sides. That alone often takes a file from several hundred kilobytes to well under twenty.

If the portal also wants exact dimensions

Dimension and size rules are separate. A common combination is a fixed pixel width and height alongside a 20 KB ceiling.

The exact-dimensions tool handles that case: it locks the pixels you specify and then applies exactly as much compression as the ceiling requires, warning you if the two rules cannot both be satisfied.

What makes a signature acceptable

Beyond size and dimensions, portals look at the content of the image:

  • Handwritten, not typed.
  • Black ink unless the notification says otherwise.
  • On plain white paper, not ruled or coloured.
  • Taken straight on, not at an angle, so the strokes are not distorted.
  • In focus across the whole signature, including the tail of the last stroke.
  • Consistent with what you will sign on the printed copy.

Questions people ask

Is 20 KB enough for a high-quality signature?

More than enough. A signature is mostly blank paper, so twenty kilobytes holds a large, sharp image without visible compression.

My file is 30 KB. Should I compress it or just crop it?

Crop first, every time. Trimming the empty margins usually solves the problem outright and preserves more quality than compression would.

Does the tool change my signature to black and white?

No. It preserves the original colours. If a portal requires black ink, start from a black-ink signature rather than relying on a conversion.

Can I use the same signature image for several applications?

Yes, and it is a sensible thing to keep. Just check each new notification, because limits and pixel requirements differ between portals.

What if my signature is wider than the portal expects?

Use the exact-dimensions tool to set the width and height precisely. A signature that is correct in size but wrong in proportion is a common rejection.

Does this store my signature?

No. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is saved between visits. Closing the page discards everything.
